Stephen King is undoubtedly one of the greats at writing horror. I would say the way he delivers the story is masterful. I feel most of his books are not horror but suspenseful, in an edge of your seat, heart in the mouth way.

One of the first books of his I read was The Green Mile.

This was initially a series of books. One was released every month for 6 months. Luckily for me, they were all put into one book as I know I could not have handled the wait.

The Green Mile is death row in the prison. The place these men are sent to await the electric chair. Set in 1935, Paul Edgecomb is a prison guard. He is compassionate to all around him including the people on death row.

His life changes when a prisoner is brought in for the rape and murder of 2 young girls. When he comes into the prison everyone is worried as he is a giant. Part of the reason John Coffey is convicted is that he was black. He was found hugging them after they were dead and he never offered any explanation.
